Abstract:

One of the measures taken to reduce the energy consumption of buildings with low costs and high returns is lightweight buildings. The European Union promotes lightweight buildings with the "Energy Performance of Buildings Directive". But the biggest disadvantage of lightweight buildings is that the lightweight building envelopes are prone to large temperature fluctuations due to their low thermal mass. Today, phase change materials, which store solar energy as thermal energy, appear as a very up-to-date method in low and zero energy lightweight building designs. In the thesis study, it is aimed to develop a method that will improve the low thermal mass of lightweight building envelopes with the use of phase change materials, which is also accepted as a new generation passive approach. The study includes the production of pumice block samples with PCM at rates of 5%, 10% and 15% and without PCM, and the determination of latent heat values and the change in thermal conductivity by conducting thermal tests of the samples in laboratories. In the experimental application study, the effect of time delay and indoor temperature fluctuations of lightweight building envelopes formed with pumice block samples without PCM and with PCM were determined. In the study; It has been concluded that with the use of PCM, the thermal mass of the building envelope and thus the time delay can be increased, the indoor temperature fluctuations can be reduced, and the efficiency of the building energy loads, especially the cooling load, can be achieved.
