Özet

Kumanovo is a settlement in the present-day Republic of North Macedonia. In 1831, Kumanova district, where the first population census was made in the modern sense, is a settlement in the Ottoman country under the Rumelia Province, Kostendil Sanjak (province). The main sources of our study are three registration books of Muslim, rayah and foreigners, numbered 5699, 5700 and 5702, dated January 15, 1831 (1 Shaban 1246) in the NFS.d catalog in the Ottoman Archives of the T.R Presidency State Archives. The population in the Muslim register is divided into three groups as sabi (Child), tuvana (Strong) and musinn (old), depending on whether they are eligible for military service. In addition, soldiers were mentioned. The population in the reaya book is divided into four groups as edna (lowest), evsat (medium), a'la (high) and exempted for 10 years and over according to the qualifications of the taxpayers. In the foreign book, there is a registration of the Muslim and rayah who came to Kumanovo later. In this study, the demographic, social and economic structure of Kumanovo district center was examined by analyzing the characteristics of the local and foreign population living in the region such as age, name, title, profession and official duties.
