The need for shelter dates back to the earliest days of humankind, and has been met through the ages, to the extent allowed by the prevailing conditions. The primary purpose of architecture is to offer shelter to humans, and to create the spaces required for a safe and sound life; that is why it has existed through the whole history of humanity. Given the fact that architecture had maintained its dynamism and continued existence since even before the dawn of history, it is a discipline for being the object of many great debates and schools of thought. The architecture in the prehistoric era has been a popular topic of deliberation for many philosophers, analyzing the matter from direct or indirect perspectives. One such philosopher, Aristotle had some remarkable comments on philosophy and architecture. In this context, the present paper strives to reveal the connection between Aristotle and architecture. To do so, what architecture is and how it should come to be will be the questions to revisit under the light of Aristotelian philosophy. A re-reading of architecture with reference to Aristotle will be based on the latter’s conceptualization of “form-essence-substance” and “being-place-void”. The discussion will focus on the form’s role plays in architecture, followed by the question whether essence or the substance is the more valuable element of the process of creation of form and architecture. The analysis will be utilized on Aristotle’s concepts within his “mathematical dimension” as means, and a redefinition of architecture will be culminated with reference to Aristotle.
