With the developing technology and increasing population, the demand for wood raw materials is increasing day by day. Alternative raw material sources are being researched in order to meet the demands. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the pulping possibilities of banana pseudo-stem wastes, which are formed in large quantities during the fruit harvest of the banana plant (Musa sapientum), using NH4OH-KOH mixture as cooking solution. The liquid to banana pseudo stem ratio, the maximum cooking temperature and the cooking time at the maximum temperature were kept constant as 6, 165 °C and 60 min., respectively. Two different total alkali charges, 20% and 22%, were used in pulping trials and the ratios of NH4OH and KOH in the composition of the cooking liquor were systematically changed to establish to see the effect of pulp properties. It was observed from the results that, the kappa numbers of the pulps decreased due to the increasing KOH and NH4OH ratios, but sufficient delignification could not be achieved. The brightness values of the produced pulps were low due to the lignin content of the pulps, but the viscosity values were preserved. Although, it has been determined that papers with high tensile index, breaking length, tear index and burst index that can be suitable for the packaging industry can be produced by NH4OH-KOH method from banana pseudo-stem waste.
