This study presents the determination of dynamic characteristics and damage pattern of masonry buildings exposed to blast loads. A masonry building around a quarry is selected as an application by taking into consideration that distance between the building and blast point to be lesser than 500m. Maximum particle velocity, dominant frequency, and air pressure, which are characteristics of blasting, are measured by the Instantel Minimate Blaster geophone set. The natural frequencies, mode shapes, and modal damping ratios of the selected masonry building are also determined by using Operational Modal Analysis method under the blast load. The effects of the blast load on the masonry building are introduced by assessing the vibration characteristics of blasting with the dynamic characteristics of the masonry building. The damage pattern is also presented by performing finite element analysis of the masonry building under blast vibration. From the study, it is shown that the determination of the natural frequency of the masonry building in-situ is an important part of the evaluation of the effects of blast loads on the masonry structures.
