letter presents mutual coupling reduction between two closely spaced E-coupled patch antennas using a complementary U-shaped polarization converter. The edge-to-edge distance of the antennas is 0.1 lambda(0), and the proposed approach achieves an average of 8 dB for the -10 dB bandwidth and a maximum of 13 dB mutual coupling reduction in measurement. To reduce the increased cross-polarization results in the E-plane, L-shaped stubs are added to the upper and lower edges of the antennas. Thanks to the stubs, the cross-polarization levels are improved from -12 to -29 dB for the E-plane. Due to its simple design, preserved radiation characteristics, and avoidance of ground plane etching, the antenna is a good candidate for next-generation antenna array applications requiring low mutual coupling and cross polarization.
