Abstract

In this study, the frictional behaviors of cam mechanisms, the important functional parts of engines, are investigated. Knowing the frictional behavior and decreasing of it at the contact region betvveen cam and tappet are very important in the cam mechanism transmitting motion. A new measurement method is therefore developed and frictional forces at the contact region are also measured. The normal force and its components for two different revolutions are measured. The measurement of frictional force is achieved using the measurement table attached to a measurement beam which is connected rigidly to the part that the normal force acts on. The friction coefficients are determined using frictional and normal forces. In this research, the normal forces, the frictional forces and the friction coefficients are comparingly given for five different oils under the same working conditions.
