Turkey has showed a significant improvement on chromite production and has started to take place between the major producing countries in the last decade. Chromite is a very important raw material for many industries especially for stainless steel production. Gravity separation is traditionally employed depending on the liberation particle size in order to obtain a saleable chromite concentrate with at least Cr2O3 content of 44% and Cr/Fe ratio of 2.20. Chromite occurs generally with olivine and serpentine. Chromite can be also found with magnetite with a less frequency. For the ores in which chromite occurs with magnetite, low ratio and grade problems appear. In such circumstances, gravity processes fail in producing saleable chromite concentrate due to the close densities of magnetite and chromite. The objective of this industrial scale study was to remove the magnetite content from the shaking table product called pre-concentrate. Magnetite was removed from pre-concentrate by using a wet low gradient magnetic separator. Two serially connected magnetic separators were used at this process which has 0.1 T and 0.2 T magnetic field strength. Grade and ratio of pre-concentrate was increased from 41.31% to 48.43%.and from 1.49 to 2.42, respectively.
