Comparing modeling approaches and sample sizes for bark thickness and volume among species and stand origin in Türkiye

Özet

Accurately estimating bark thickness and volume is important for assessing tree resistance after disturbances and calculating roundwood volume. In Türkiye, black pine ( Pinus nigra Arnold.), Taurus cedar ( Cedrus libani A. Rich.), oriental spruce ( Picea orientalis L.), and black alder ( Alnus glutinosa Gaertn.) are economically and ecologically important tree species, accounting for approximately one quarter of the total forested land in the country. We compared three quantitative approaches and four levels of sampling intensity for modeling bark thickness and bark volume. Specifically, the three modeling approaches include (I) using two separate diameter models, (II) using a combination of a stem taper model and a bark model and (III) adding bark thickness at breast height to calibrate a bark model. Model sensitivity was evaluated using four training datasets constructed with 100%, 75%, 50%, and 25% of measurements per tree. Results show that all approaches can provide unbiased estimates of bark thickness and volume, but slightly biased estimates of bark thickness were found when using approach I at the tree tip for Taurus cedar, oriental spruce and planted black alder. Regarding bark thickness, absolute mean bias reduced with increasing sample size for black pine and Taurus cedar, while it stayed consistent for oriental spruce and black alder. For black pine, the ratio of bark volume to total stem volume was observed at 28.4%, followed by Taurus cedar (18.1%), oriental spruce (13.2%) and black alder (9.06–9.81%).
