Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to apply the modified Vlasov model to earthquake analysis of beams resting on elastic foundations, and to analyze the effects of the subsoil depth, the beam length and their ratio on its responses. For this purpose, a computer program is coded for the dynamic out-of-plane response of beams resting on elastic foundations. The finite element method is used for spatial integration and the Newmark-B method is used for time integration. The solution technique is an iterative process which is dependent upon the value of the parameter gamma. Graphs are presented to evaluate the effects of the beam length and subsoil depth on its responses. Numerical examples show the applicability of the modified Vlasov model to earthquake analysis of beams resting on elastic foundations. (C) 1997 Academic Press Limited.
