3RD INTERNATIONAL CIVIL ENGINEERING & ARCHITECTURE CONFERENCE, Trabzon, Türkiye, 12 - 14 Ekim 2023, cilt.1, sa.1, ss.1761-1772
Purpose: The aim of the research was to compare the mechanical properties and economic aspects of asphalt mixtures
with SBS and Elvax/Elvaloy modified bitumen.
Study design/methodology/approach: SBS-modified bitumen and Elvax/Elvaloy-modified bitumen were prepared in
a high-shear mixer. SBS was used at a dosage of 5%, which is a commonly used proportion. Elvax and Elvaloy were
added to the bitumen at weight proportions of 0.8% and 1%, respectively, based on experience. Dense-graded asphalt
concrete design was performed, and the produced asphalt mixture samples were subjected to repeated creep, indirect
tensile strength, and Modified Lottman tests. The asphalt mixtures were evaluated for deformation, low-temperature
cracking, and resistance to moisture damage. Additionally, an economic comparison was made between SBS-modified
bitumen and Elvax/Elvaloy-modified bitumen.
Findings: Based on the mechanical tests, it was observed that the modified bitumen mixtures yielded comparable results
and exhibited significant improvement in mechanical properties compared to the control mixture. In terms of economic
comparison, it was concluded that Elvax/Elvaloy-modified bitumen was more cost-effective than SBS-modified
bitumen.
Originality/value: Considering the performance of SBS and Elvax/Elvaloy-modified bitumen mixtures, it is understood
that they can be used interchangeably. However, due to the price advantage of Elvax/Elvaloy-modified bitumen, it is
evaluated that it can be preferred.
