Abstract

The Turkish Government has planned to establish 400 new automatic weather stations (AWSs) in seven natural disaster-prone regions throughout the country. Site selection is one of the most important steps in the process of setting up an AWS. In this study, a GIS-based siting method was developed and applied in order to identify the most appropriate sites for five AWSs to be constructed in Trabzon Province. Consequently, the 164 sites found to be suitable were analysed in relation to the locations of the existing meteorological observation stations, and five suitable locations were determined for the new AWSs.
