The purpose of this study is to investigate the primary school teachers' proficiency perceptions about the measurement and assessment methods. Survey method was used in this research. The sample consists of 975 randomly selected primary school teachers from 15 provinces located in Turkey. This survey consisted of 22 5-point Likert-type items about assessment methods and techniques. The data analyses were descriptive. This study revealed that the teachers were most proficient in traditional and objective assessment methods; however they were not proficient in performance and alternative assessment methods. Thus, in-service training programs about alternative assessment methods should be provided for primary school teachers. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
