Özet

Despite numerous studies on cutting and/or machining different materials with abrasive water jet in the relevant literature, its cutting ability in terms of cutting depth and quality, has not reached the desired level yet. This significantly limits the widespread use of the technology in related fields. Some performance improvement techniques, developed in recent years such as forward angling the jet, multi-pass cutting and controlled nozzle oscillation have enabled the abrasive water jet cutting processes to a more advanced level. There are also many studies in the existing literature that use these techniques to improve the cutting quality of the materials. However, almost no study has been yet conducted for improving the cutting performance of the abrasive water jet in rock cutting/machining applications. Therefore, in this paper, a preliminary investigation into effect of multi-pass abrasive waterjet cutting on the cutting qualities of an igneous rock was experimentally conducted. In this regards, firstly, the physico-mechanical properties of igneous rock were determined and the rock sample was sized for cutting process. And, then, the work pieces were cut with multi-pass traverse speeds, keeping the abrasive water jet machine characteristics and other cutting variables such as standoff distance, abrasive flow rate, and working pressure constant. The results showed that substantial improvements in the cutting qualities of the rock were achieved.
