Pathogenicity factors of microorganisms can be investigated thoroughly only if in vivo conditions can be created. In vivo expression techniques (IVET) are developed for this purpose. In this paper the investigation of the virulence genes of streptococci is described as an example to IVET. IVET and similar techniques will provide the means for defining new pathogenicity factors, induction and regulation of these genes, developing new vaccines, identifying new target antigens to develop new antimicrobials.
