ASIA-PACIFIC EDUCATION RESEARCHER, vol.22, no.4, pp.347-355, 2013 (SSCI)
The aim of this study is to examine the fifth grade students' perceptions about writing through metaphor analysis. This is a descriptive research in nature, and a qualitative research method was employed in the study. The participants of the study are a total of 594 fifth graders in the city of Ankara. The students are asked to complete the statement given in the form such as "Writing is like aEuro broken vertical bar.." to reveal their perceptions about writing. Then, these statements were examined through content analysis to identify the participants' metaphors about writing. The metaphors identified were grouped under 14 categories. The findings indicate that the participants mostly perceive writing as "something that is liked" and that they rarely perceive the act of writing as "something that is boring." Thus, it might be argued that the students' metaphors about writing involve their positive attitude toward writing.
