Abstract
This chapter addresses the significance of maintaining hand hygiene in EDs and highlights critical considerations in its implementation. Hand hygiene is one of the most fundamental methods for preventing healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and, despite being discovered centuries ago, continues to retain its pivotal importance. Numerous methods are available to ensure effective hand hygiene; even basic handwashing with soap and water can prevent a significant proportion of HAIs. The “Five Moments for Hand Hygiene” outlined by the World Health Organization (WHO) has become a standard protocol for all hospital units. However, in EDs, which operate 24/7 and are often overcrowded, maintaining proper hand hygiene is even more crucial for preventing nosocomial infections. The broad clinical spectrum of patients admitted to EDs creates a high-risk environment where diverse pathogens coexist. Additionally, family members and visitors can also serve as potential sources of infection. Given the high patient turnover and the frequency of invasive procedures, neglecting hand hygiene is likely to result in serious cross-contamination issues.
