Abstract

Wogonin has the structure of 5,7-dihydroxy-8-methoxyflavone and is specifically identified in Lamiaceae and Scutellaria species. Wogonin is one of the major compounds of the Scutellaria baicalensis root extract which is one of the most popular traditional Chinese medicines and has been widely used for thousands of years. Wogonin has been shown to be therapeutically effective by in vitro and in vivo studies. In particular, its anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and tranquilizer effects are prominent. In this study, recent advances in wogonin’s bioactivities and molecular mechanisms of action, as well as potential therapeutics for future therapy, are discussed. Clinical trials, human studies, toxicology and safety reports, and patents are also reported in light of the current literature. Thus, this chapter covers all research advances on wogonin.
