Abstract

History of mining is as old as human history. Therefore, mining has never lost its significance for human race. Following the industrial revolution, demand for raw materials has been increased dramatically. Increase in the demand has led the production rate in mining sector boost strikingly which is the only resource of raw materials. The increase in the production resulted in big disasters because of the lack of simultaneous development of mining technology with production. In this paper, firstly a brief history of mining and mining accidents were introduced. Major mining accidents took place in different countries were mentioned which were Courriéres, Monongah, Senghenydd and Benxihu mining disasters. Afterwards, worst mining disasters occured in Turkey which are Armutcuk, Kozlu, Kure, Elbistan, Soma and Ermenek accidents and their reasons were mentioned. As a result, a biref evaluation about all mining disasters were given at the end of the paper.
