Since it is necessary to use many criteria together in highway alignment determination process, using Multi-criteria Evaluation in the process is more appropriate. Moreover, almost all of the criteria used require the use of spatial data: therefore, GIS use in the process provides great convenience.
There are many methods that make possible to use GIS and MCE together. In almost all of these methods, it is necessary to convert thematic maps, which are used to represent the criteria and have different units, into a common unit, that is, they should be standardized.
In this study, standardization operation of criteria maps belonging to a highway alignment determination study is examined. Maps of a small region in Tokat province is used in examples. Not all of the standardization operations are given, instead, only some example standardizations showing the philosophy of the approach are given. The entire example standardizations are performed by using the IDRISI software, which is a raster based GIS software.
