Abstract

Generally, the conventional design procedures of RC cantilever retaining wall is based on the trial and error method. So cost of RC cantilever retaining wall is depend on the experience of the structural designer. In this study, design procedures incorporating Artificial Bee Colony and Cuckoo Search Algorithm are developed for discrete optimization of RC cantilever retaining wall. The objective function considered is the cost (or weight) of unit length of the wall. The objective function is minimized subjected to strength requirements. Eight design variables representing the cross sectional dimensions and reinforcing steel are chosen. The optimization problem complemented by 25 cross sectional and strength constraints. Obtained results from Artificial Bee Colony and Cuckoo Search Algorithm have been compared. Also effect of surcharge load, backfill slope, internal friction angle of retained soil and cohesion of base soil on optimum values of objective function for minimum cost and minimum weight have been investigated.
