Abstract

Balatlar Church is one of the monumental structures that has survived to this day in the city of Sinope/ Sinop. In 2010, Prof. Dr. Gulgun Koroglu under the chairmanship Scientific excavations continue. Balatlar, which is an important visit point in Sinop's cultural history and tourism, is a complex of structures consisting of different functional structures of monumental sizes, which have been determined to cover a larger area day by day through ongoing excavations. Balatlar, which is defined by the architectural data and excavation results that have survived to the present day, was built as a bath in the Roman Period (2 century AD) on the ruins of buildings from the Hellenistic Period. It was understood that various units were converted into churches at different stages from the Byzantine period to the Ottoman period and were used as a monastery, workshop, church and cemetery until 1924.  According to the results of the excavations carried out by the Sinop Museum on the parcels outside the Balatlar excavation area; The surrounding area has been inhabited since the Archaic period; It has been determined that there are public and sacred buildings. In the light of these data, it is concluded that Balatlar and its surroundings have been "an important center since the early periods". It is understood that the development area of the Balatlar Church has not been adequately defined in the zoning and/or conservation plans that have been made to date and are still in progress.  In the study, we draw attention to the fact that although there is a lot of concrete data, the site boundaries given in the past are insufficient.  and in the Conservation Development Plan, which is still under construction, It is aimed to create data so that the I degree archaeological site and its extension area in Balat can be registered as a II/III degree archaeological site.
