Özet

This study analyses Armenian names from the mid-16th and 17th centuries in the city of Trabzon using anthroponymic approaches. Anthroponymy, the study of the historical, cultural and social context of personal names, forms the basic methodology of the study. The Shar'iyye registers were selected as the primary source due to the demographic and socio-cultural information they contain. A total of 30,000 data points from these sources were analysed, and only those containing Armenian expressions were considered for the study. Based on the anthroponymic data obtained, the neighbourhoods inhabited by Armenians were identified and visualised on a map. By analysing the linguistic and cultural origins of the names, conclusions were drawn about naming practises in the Ottoman period and the socio-cultural interaction processes between different ethnic and religious communities. This study thus contributes to our understanding of naming practises in the Ottoman period as an indicator of identity and cultural continuity.
