The term acute myocardial infarction (AMI); known as a heart attack, should be used when
there is evidence of myocardial damage with necrosis (defined as elevation of cardiac
troponin values with at least one value above the upper reference limit of 99 percent) in a
clinical setting consistent with myocardial ischemia. Typical symptoms of ischemia such as
persistent chest pain, extension to the arm and neck, and ST segment elevation in at least
two consecutive leads are defined as STEMI.
