Abstract

© 2022 IEEE.Frequency of power systems tends to fluctuate due to the changes on both generation and demand sides. To overcome the undesired fluctuations in the frequency, load frequency control (LFC) method is utilized. The LFC regulates the frequency of the power systems and maintains its value to a specified level. Researchers have been studying on LFC problem by proposing novel control schemes or improving the performance of the existing control techniques. Implementing meta-heuristic algorithms in the existing control methods is a practical way to improve the frequency regulation performance. In this study, tilt-integral-derivative (TID) and TID with a fractional filter (TIDFF) controllers which are optimized by Equilibrium Optimization Algorithm (EOA) are employed in a two-area non-reheat thermal power system. TIDFF is a controller which has an extra fractional derivative filter that conventional TID controller doesn't have. The performance of optimally tuned Proportional-integral-derivative (PID), TID and TIDFF controllers are compared with each other by considering frequency deviations in the both areas including tie-line power deviation. Settling time, overshoot and undershoot values, and integral of time weighted absolute error (ITAE) metric are presented. The results indicate that the proposed TIDFF controller outperforms both the PID and the TID controllers.
