Abstract

Names becoming popular in the society are important indicators that show the direction of mental, social, cultural changes in everyday life. Although research was made about preferred names and name giving in Turkey, there is very limited research which evaluate present-day conditions dominated by communicative means and focus on the effect of media on changing name catalogs. However media is a very important means that shape patterns of social preference by guiding social good and beauty. In this study we focus on how television and television series affect name-giving preferences. As conclusion of this study, we found that change in the official population statistics is parallel with popular television series and names of popular figures of these TV series. When we look at the conditions of this parallelism, it is understood that names of characters on TV series who have a positive image, become widespread in the framework of having a popular image and becoming new and different. The other condition of this parallelism is that they present people personality models through which they can identify.
