Özet
Backround: Medicinal plants are organisms that have long been used in traditional
medicine and possess a wide range of pharmacological effects due to their
bioactive compounds. However, investigating their genotoxic potential is of
great importance for the safe use of these plants. Tanacetum parthenium
(L.) Sch.Bip., a perennial herb belonging to the Asteraceae family, is widely
used for various health issues such as migraine, fever, headache, and
gallstones. Although the genotoxic effects of T. parthenium on animal
cell lines are well-documented, no genotoxicity studies have been conducted on
plant genetic systems.
Aims: In this study, for the first time, the genotoxic effects of aqueous
extracts prepared from parts of T. parthenium collected during the
flowering period were investigated on Helianthus annuus L. (sunflower)
root tip cells.
Materials
and methods: Germinated sunflower seeds were treated with extracts at concentrations
of 2.5, 5, 10, 20, and 40 mg/mL of T. parthenium for 24 hours. In each
treatment, at least 500 cells were analyzed from 5 preparations, and the
mitotic index was calculated.
Results: The results of the study showed that the mitotic index decreased by
38.52% compared to the control group. The findings indicate that T.
parthenium extracts cause a mitotic-depressive effect in mitotic cells in a
consantration-dependent manner.
Conclusion: The study demonstrates that T. parthenium exhibits significant
genotoxic effects in root tip cells of H. annuus and highlights the need
for more comprehensive studies to ensure the safe use of the plant.
