Abstract

Objective: Sharenting, a phenomenon created by combining the words “sharing” and “parenting”, can be explained as sharing content about minor children and parenting on online social media. This study aims to examine the validity and reliability of the Sharenting Evaluation Scale (SES) in Turkish culture. Methods: The sample consisted of 357 parents, 289 female (81%) and 68 male (19%), with a mean age of 37.15 years (sd = 5.62). The Young Internet Addiction Scale and demo-graphic form were used together with the SES. Firstly, the linguistic equivalence of the scale was examined and after it was found to have linguistic equivalence, validity and reliability analyses were performed. Results: The confirmatory factor analysis showed that the Turkish form was compatible with the original form of the scale and had good goodness-of-fit values (𝜒2 /sd = 2.21, GFI = .93, AGFI = .91, RMSEA = .058, SRMR = .0556, CFI = .95, IFI = .96, TLI = .95). Cronbach’s Alpha val-ues of the implications, social behaviour, and self-control dimensions of the SES and the whole scale were .88, .74, .66, and .82 respectively. Sharenting was found to be associated with internet addiction. Conclusions: It can be said that the SES is a valid and reliable measurement tool for the assessment of sharenting in Turkey. It is believed that this scale and this study will contribute to the studies that will investigate this phenomenon, which is important for parents and children as well as society.
