A META-ANALYSIS: REVIEW OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLINGENCE RELATED POSTGRADUATE THESES WITH A FOCUS ON EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence has started to  be frequently used across a wide range of scientific disciplines recently, hereby, education and training is one of these fields. The aim of this study is to examine postgraduate theses/dissertations on artificial intelligence in Turkey via meta-analysis research method, with a focus on education and training. Meta-analysis is the statistical combination of the results of multiple studies addressing a similar research question. Meta-analysis is the gold standard for research synthesis across all disciplines (Borenstein, 2019). It is a systematic review. In Turkey, there are 781 research theses/dissertations about artificial intelligence published in the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) National Thesis Center Database. 34 Ph.D Dissertations and 155 Master Theses are in English. 180  Ph.D Dissertations and 412 Master theses are in Turkish. Inclusion and Exclusion criteria comprise characteristics that are used to identify potential research which should not be included in a meta-analysis. As the inclusion criteria, key word search was made. In line with this purpose, out of 781 theses only 9 postgraduate studies were accessed in Education and Training. Other disciplines were excluded. Descriptive statistics was used to evaluate the theses included in the research. Information such as publication years, sample size, participants, setting, research method, instruments, data analysis, aim of the study, results and in which institute they were produced constitute the findings of the research. The oldest artificial intelligence thesis entitled as “Artificial intelligence Applications” was written in the year 1990 at a Computer Engineering and Control Department. According to research findings, Education and training theses/dissertations were written in much near future, in the years 2024, 2023, 2022, 2020, 2014 and 2004 and it was presented through statistical charts.
