One of the most important aims of early childhood education is to arrange the environment to support children’s development and learning. Studies conducted have shown that the environment has an important effect on an individual’s personality and social development. In this respect, today spatial design of early childhood education environments has had an increasing interest in focus of interdisciplinary studies. Color, which is one of the environmental design elements of early childhood education, is important in increasing educational quality when used both functionally and aesthetically. An examination of studies on child environment designs shows that the main focus areas are making suggestions on arranging the physical environment, theoretical viewpoints based on environmental psychology or educational psychology, spatial understanding, spatial density, transport, chaotic nature of materials and teacher-child ratio. Yet, there are few studies into the use of color in the design of early childhood education environments and no study has been encountered on this subject in our country. Therefore, in this study, the colors used in interior design of 30 early childhood education institutions in Ankara province in 2008-2009 academic year and the data obtained were discussed in the light of research in the related literature. At the end of the study, suggestions were made for early childhood educators and interior designers.
