In this study, organic carbon content, maturity and organic matter type of the Late Carboniferous sequence in the Demirozu area (Eastern Black Sea region), and its source rock potential are investigated. Total organic carbon contents of the Late Carboniferous shale and coal-bearing shale samples range from 0.25 to 4.80% wt. Residual carbon contents of the samples are equal to or slightly lower than their total organic carbon contents. In HI-OI (Hydrogen Index vs. Oxygen Index) and S2-total organic carbon kerogen diagrams, all organic matters are plotted in the Type III kerogen field and are composed mainly of residual organic matter and a lesser amount of Type III kerogen. Based on Tmax values, the Late Carboniferous sequence is of over mature character. In addition, potential yield (PY) values are also very low.
