Objective: Pectoralis major muscle is one of the auxiliary respiratory muscles. COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019) is a disease that can affect the respiratory system. Our aim in this study was to examine the relationship between the cross-sectional area and density of the musculus pectoralis major and mortality in COVID-19 cases. Methods: A total of 201 individuals aged 65 years and over were included in the study. Right and left pectoralis major cross-sectional areas and mean densities were calculated using the Slicer application using the thorax tomographs of the cases. Laboratory blood values of the patients were also analysed. Parameters that may be associated with mortality were analysed. Results: In male cases, a significant correlation was found between decreased mean density of the left pectoralis major and high mortality (p=0.011). In female cases, decreased crosssectional areas of the m. pectoralis major on both right and left sides were found to be associated with higher mortality (p=0.015, p=0.015, respectively). Decrease in lymphocyte values, increase in NLR (Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio) values, increase in AST (Aspartate aminotransferase) values, increase in LDH (Lactate dehydrogenase) values and increase in CRP (C-reactive protein) values were associated with high mortality (p=0.019, p=0.002, p<0.001, p<0.001, p<0.001, p<0.001, respectively). Conclusion: Pectoralis major muscle mean density and crosssectional area were found to be associated with mortality. These values, which can be measured from tomography images, can be used in planning the treatment of patients. Keywords: COVID-19, cross-sectional area, density, mortality, pectoralis major
