ABSTRACT
As an alternative abrasive, utilization of Brown Fused Alumina (BFA) in abrasive waterjet (AWJ) cutting of marble is investigated in this study. The performance of the BFA is compared with the garnet which is widely used as an abrasive in the AWJ cutting applications. Marble samples are cut with the constant operating variables of the AWJ (traverse speed, abrasive mass flow rate, waterjet pressure and standoff distance). Cutting performances of these two abrasives are evaluated based on the cut depth, kerf width, kerf angles and surface roughness. The results showed that the BFA can be effectively used as an alternative to garnet in the AWJ cutting of rock such as marble.
