Abstract

Two series of the polyaromatic compounds (1-6 and 7-14) have been isolated from the starfish Pteraster militaris after column chromatography over Amberlite XAD-2 resin. Their structures have been established by spectroscopic means and confirmed as 2,4-diphenyl-1-butene (1), 4(p-ethylphenyl), 2-phenyl-1-butene (2a), 2-(p-ethylphenyl)-4-phenyl-1-butene (2b), 2,4-bis(p-ethylphenyl)-1-butene (3), 1,3-diphenyl-1-propanone (4), 3-(p-ethylphenyl)-1-phenyl-1-propanone (5a), 1-(p-ethylphenyl)-3-phenyl-1-propanone (5b), 1,3-bis(p-ethylphenyl)-1-propanone (6), 2,4,6-triphenyl-1-hexene (7) and 2,4,6-triphenyl-1-hexanone (7d) by synthesis. Compounds 1 and 7 are known1 and have been synthesized by different route but the rest of the isolated and synthesized polyaromatic compounds are new.
