Özet

Urban conservation awareness in Türkiye has developed relatively late compared to the deep-rooted traditions of Europe. The urbanisation process, which has accelerated especially since the mid-20th century, has put the historical and cultural heritage under threat and brought the necessity of protecting the urban fabric to the agenda. In this direction, various conservation practices have been developed to protect the original identity of cities and transfer it to future generations. However, urban conservation practices in Türkiye are predominantly shaped by the decisions and legal regulations of the central government, which limits the participation of local people in the process and threatens the sustainability of conservation efforts. This study aims to evaluate conservation policies in Türkiye based on the example of an urban protected area located in the city centre of Yozgat, a medium-sized city in Anatolia. Qualitative and quantitative methods were used together in the research. Based on the literature review and on-site observations, the past and current situation of the area was analysed; spatial changes were digitised by mapping method. In line with the findings, the current situation was evaluated through SWOT analysis and the importance of locally based approaches for sustainable urban conservation in provincial cities was emphasised.
