Abstract

Manganese is a silvery grey, iron-like metal. Manganese is widely used in the metallurgical industry for alloying and desulfurization purposes. Apart from the iron and steel making; it has also wide range of application in chemical industry. The first step of production of manganese chemicals is preparation of crude solution. The crude solution of manganese is commercially prepared from natural manganese ores by carbothermal reduction and leaching. Insoluble or partly soluble higher valence manganese oxides (MnO2, Mn2O3, and Mn3O4) are converted to acid soluble MnO oxide. In this study, reduction behavior of manganese ore pellets, consisting of pyrolusite ore, is investigated between 700 and 1000 °C with using metallurgical coke. Experimental results have clearly shown that the desired reduction levels are achieved with increasing process temperature. All of the manganese components were converted to MnO form by reduction at 1000 °C for 45 minutes, and 12.69% of weight loss was observed.
