Turkey has several regions that could be a subject of historical tourism. Tourism provides an important economic resource and facilitates the transfer of historical architectural heritage to future centuries through restoration. It could be observed that cultural aspects ranked first in travel preferences throughout the world in the recent years. Today, tourist expectations diverge from the triplet concept of “the sea, the sand and the sun” and focus on the discovery of authentic experiences and different cultures. In such context, cultural tourism offers options that increase the economic potential, especially for the small-scale historic cities. However, in order to ensure the sustainability of cultural tourism in such historic cities, it becomes necessary to protect, develop and transfer the indispensable products of cultural heritage such as natural areas, monumental and architectural heritage and cultural identities and traditions to the next generations. “Architecture” could be considered as one of the important mechanisms in expressing sustainable cultural tourism. Sustainability of architecture, which could be considered an important cultural resource, is possible through conservation and restoration. In Turkey, where a significant part of the world cultural heritage resides, a number of studies were commenced to ensure the sustainability of cultural heritage in terms of conserve-use-survive principle. In this context, the present study focused on the Islamköy village of Atabey district of Isparta province, which provides a significant tourism reserve. The main objectives of the present study, in terms of a framework that problematizes sustaining and transferring traditional housing patterns to future generations could be summarized as the identification of the qualities of the traditional houses of Islamköy and to reveal the tourism potentials through their general characteristics. Therefore, Okul Sokak which is located at the center of Islamkoy was designated as the pilot area. The selected pilot area was assigned as the study area to the students of Project 7 in Karadeniz Technical University Department of Interior Architecture in the 2017-2018 academic year fall semester. Proposals were developed through projects that focus on how the houses would be re-functionalized and how they would be facilitated in the case that the village offered tourism. In this respect, primarily, a literature review and onsite observations were completed regarding Islamköy and the traditional texture. In the second phase, examinations on the seven houses in the pilot area were completed. Third stage covered the studio process. In the fourth stage, the utilization of housing in terms of tourism was discussed with respect to the data obtained throughout the studio process. All studies were aimed at the issue focusing on the place of tourism in obtaining the sustainability of the historical cities of the future.
