XI All-Russian Scientific Conference with International Participation “The Biological Reclamation and Monitoring of Disturbed Lands”, Jekaterinburg, Rusya, 12 - 16 Eylül 2022, ss.276-284
Mining is an essential activity because of the increased population, industrial and technological development, and meet economic needs. However, minimizing the negative effects of mining
activities on the ecosystems is very important for the sustainable use of natural resources. It is a
difficult and long process for the disturbed ecosystem to restore and regenerate itself by naturally.
This study was carried out for the Bakırköy copper mine site and its surroundings in Artvin province in the Eastern Black Sea Region of Turkey. The original forest ecosystem around the copper
mine is pure oriental spruce (Picea orientalis L. Link.). In the study, it was aimed to monitor the
natural remediation process and its rapidity of the forest ecosystem according to NDVI values. The
mining operation was stopped at the 1941. For monitoring to the regeneration of natural vegetation, NDVI values were determined using Landsat satellite images (Landsat 4–5 TM and Landsat
8–9 OLI/TIRS) from 1985 to 2021 for every year. The results showed that NDVI increased gradually and constantly between 1985 to 2011, where was not any silvicultural treatment and harvesting,
but after 2011, it tended to decrease due to being included in the scope of the managed forests. Despite the destroyed land and unfavourable soil conditions, the climate has played a dominant and
remedial role in the regeneration of natural vegetation
