Language learner
autonomy has been one of the topics with rising interest in recent years with
especially continuous technological innovations in language learning. With the
numerous facilities provided by the technology integration into language
learning processes, learners appear to be more ready for autonomous language
learning. In addition to the learners’ role, EFL teachers’ awareness of the
concept and their role in the promotion of autonomous learning is needed. Thus,
this study aims to investigate English teachers' beliefs about learner
autonomy. To gather evidence, a Likert-type questionnaire with 37 items was used.
The participants were invited to the study through convenience sampling via
online platforms namely, Facebook and WhatsApp. The data collected were
analyzed using SPSS 26. Descriptive statistics (i.e., mean, frequencies) were
calculated. Findings demonstrated that EFL teachers in this survey, more or
less, have a clear idea of what learner autonomy is, and they have positive
about significance of learner autonomy. The preliminary findings have revealed
that EFL teachers consider autonomy as related to success in language learning.
The teachers have also been of the opinion that it is necessary for learners to
act independent from their teacher. It is believed that the current survey
study may contribute to our understanding of EFL teachers’ awareness about
learner autonomy.
