Özet

This study investigates the performance of a novel bio-based adhesive for use in wood-based panel manufacturing. The adhesive, formulated from functionalized lignin and urea-formaldehyde (LUF), was used in medium density fiberboard. Two LUF adhesive formulations containing functionalized lignin at 40 wt.% and 50 wt.%, based on the amount of urea, were synthesized. The MDF panels are produced on an industrial scale with a thickness of 18 mm. Mechanical properties including modulus of rupture (MOR), modulus of elasticity (MOE), and internal bonding strength (IB) as well as physical properties such as density, water absorption (WA), thickness swelling (TS), surface roughness and free formaldehyde emission of the samples, were determined. Overall, the properties of LUF-bonded MDF panels were enhanced compared to those of UF-bonded MDF panels. The results indicate that LUF adhesives demonstrate promising mechanical and physical performance and have the potential to serve as a sustainable alternative to conventional adhesives in wood-based panel applications.
