9th International Congress on Advances in Civil Engineering, Trabzon, Turkey, 27 - 30 September 2010
The aim of this study is to determine dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration, water temperature (T), pH and electrical conductivity (EC) values along with main branch of the stream Harsit, evaluate according to Turkish Water Pollution Control Regulation (TWPCR), and also assess the effect of municipal wastewater discharge on DO concentration. For this reason, a study was fortnightly conducted during the four seasons between March 2009 and February 2010. Total of 24 in situ studies conducted in five monitoring stations.
The yearly average DO concentration values were 10.31 mg/L for Tohumoğlu station with a range of 8.39-12.46 mg/L, 10.41 mg/L for Tekke station with a range of 8.57-12.60 mg/L, 10.39 mg/L for Akçakale station with a range of 8.47-12.80 mg/L, 9.92 mg/L for Gümüşhane station, where Gümüşhane municipal wastewater discharged into the stream Harşit, with a range of 7.85-12.75 mg/L and 10.68 mg/L for Torul station with a range of 9.00-12.76 mg/L. The greatest dissolved oxygen concentration values were observed in the spring season, all the same the lowest DO values were also observed in the summer season.
The yearly average T values were 8.8 °C for the first with a range of 2.1-17.2 °C, 9.1 °C for the second with a range of 2.2-17.5 °C, 9.6 °C for the third with a range of 2.0-18.7 °C, 10.5 °C for the fourth with a range of 2.2-20.6 °C, and 10.8 °C for the fifth with a range of 3.1-21.4 °C. The greatest T values were observed in the end of the summer and the beginning of the autumn, all the same the lowest T values were also observed in the winter.
