This chapter focuses on assessing the regeneration needs for tree species at specific sites, particularly in the context of reforestation and restoration efforts under changing climate conditions. It aims to identify current and future limiting factors that may affect the establishment and growth of tree species. The critical regeneration phase requires a multifaceted approach that considers various environmental, biological, and socioeconomic factors, with attention to long-term adaptation to an altered climate. Defining clear objectives is essential for addressing site limitations and involves engaging stakeholders who influence or are affected by forestation decisions. Objectives may vary based on land tenure, site conditions, and the anticipated benefits from ecosystem services. Our objective is to identify potential limiting factors today and under future climate. The growing trend toward establishing mixed species stands necessitates a deeper understanding of site conditions, particularly microsite variability, to ensure successful establishment. The likely future meso- and microclimate at a planting site is of particular interest in assessing site conditions. Increasing temperature in northern Europe and decreasing summer precipitation in southern Europe are likely to impose significant stress on forest ecosystems, including drought-induced mortality aided by vapor pressure deficit.
