This study focuses on the control of a Distribution Static Compensator (D-STATCOM) integrated into a distribution network with photovoltaic system, aiming to enhance voltage quality and system stability. In this context, the discrete time PI controller parameters are optimized using two nature inspired metaheuristic algorithms: RIME and Gorilla Troops Optimization (GTO). The primary objective is to improve the system's time domain response by minimizing a predefined error based fitness function. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed controller configurations significantly regulate voltage and improve power factor compared to the scenario without D-STATCOM support. Additionally, harmonic distortion levels are effectively mitigated, leading to enhanced overall system performance. Among the tested methods, the RIME-based controller exhibited a more stable dynamic behavior than its GTO counterpart. The findings confirm that metaheuristic algorithms offer effective and applicable solutions for controller optimization, emphasizing their relevance in smart grids incorporating renewable energy sources.
