WHY DO I EXERCISE? AN ASSESSMENT OF THE KNOWLEDGE LEVELS OF EXERCISING INDIVIDUALS
ABSTRACT
Objective: This study aims to evaluate the knowledge levels of individuals who exercise regarding the
necessity of exercise and its benefits.
Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted with the participation of 80 individuals who exercise
regularly. Participants were given a 20-question knowledge test about the reasons for exercising, the effects of
exercise on health, and the necessity of exercising. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and the
average knowledge level score was calculated.
Results: The average knowledge score of the participants was 72.4 ± 12.6 out of 100. While 65% of the
participants were aware of the cardiovascular benefits of exercise, 5% lacked sufficient knowledge about its
effects on the musculoskeletal system. Awareness of the ideal duration and intensity of exercise was 45%.
70% of the participants exercised for weight control, while only 12% were exercising to improve their mental
health. Additionally, while 55% of individuals knew that exercise could improve muscle strength and
endurance, they lacked sufficient knowledge about the ideal exercise frequency. Considering the level of
physical activity in Turkey, it is known that a significant portion of the general population has low to moderate
levels of physical activity. Although this study evaluated individuals who exercise regularly, the fact that many
participants lacked sufficient knowledge about the optimal duration and intensity of exercise suggests that
there may be deficiencies in practical application.
Discussion: The results indicate that the knowledge levels of individuals who exercise are generally at a
moderate level. Although public health programs in Turkey aim to increase physical activity, it is necessary to
expand educational programs to ensure that individuals exercise consciously. In this context, it is
recommended to promote informative campaigns about exercise and disseminate guidelines on correct exercise
techniques.
