Özet

Objective: This study was designed to determine clinical features, associated problems and complications of open neural tube defect (NTD) those were followed up and treated in a neonatal intensive care unit between January 2011-June 2017. In addition, the estimated open NTD frequency was tried to be determined in Trabzon city between January 2014-December 2016. Material and Methods: This study was retrospectively carried out between January 2011-June 2017 at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Medical Faculty of Karadeniz Technical University. Medical records of newborns those were followed up and treated with open NTD were recorded. Results: Seventy-nine newborns were followed up and treated for open NTD during the study period. The estimated open NTD frequency was 2.77/1.000 according to pregnant women and 0.95/1.000 live births in our city. 16 (20.3%) of the mothers had a high risk factor for NTD. None of the mothers of the cases with NTD had received appropriate dose of folic acid supplementation around the time of conception. The most common lesion was meningomyelocele [n=67 (84.8%)] and the most common localization was lumbosacral region [n=31 (39.2%)]. There were no statistically differences in terms of the associated problems, developing infections and the time of hospitalization between the NTD infants born in our hospital and those referred to our NICU. Time of hospitalization was statistically higher in newborns with cerebrospinal fluid leaks and/or meningitis than in newborns without cerebrospinal fluid leaks and/or meningitis. Conclusion: Early operation of open NTD may reduce the incidence of infection and the time of hospitalization. Early diagnosis and treatment of the accompanying problems and creation of follow-up plan with multidisciplinary approach is very important for increasing the quality of life in cases with NTD. High-dose folic acid supplementation should be recommended for woman at high risk of NTD.
