In models used to evaluate the optimum port capacity, it is essential to determine various parameters related to ship traffic and service times. In order to estimate these parameters, port statistics are utilized. The port statistics give an opportunity to indicate the role of the ports on the national economy and to evaluate the traffic trend in the future. Additionally, they supply important data for the construction of the new ports. In this study, the raw data obtained from the Samsun Port is classified and frequency analyses are performed. The observed distribution of ship arrivals, interarrival times and service times are compared by chi–square test whether they can be presented or not by various theoretical probability distributions and the findings are examined. In addition, the distributions of observation and the theoretical probability distributions are compared with histograms and graphs.
