Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) disease is an emerging tick-borne zoonosis and an extremely important public health concern in Turkey since its first identification in 2002. The virus shows great genetic diversity correlated with its appearance in three continents in the world and tends to expand its release to new areas. The existence of of the biological tick vectors and a suitable habitat in disease endemic regions are the predisposing factors for disease emergence in Turkey and elsewhere. Except for supportive treatment and some beneficial effects the antiviral ribavirin and antiserum options, there is no prophylactic vaccine for the disease.
Since Turkey is one of the most endemic countries for CCHF disease, deliberate studies regarding to all aspects of virus circulation should be conducted in all endemic, potentially endemic regions of the country. This is critically important to gain valuable information to predict the future consequences of the disease and to design effective vaccines and treatment facilities. Because of the zoonotic nature of the virus, it offers a good prospect for one health concept that requires strong collaboration of human and veterinary medicine with the view to combat the disease.
Turkey’s considerable experiences and efforts to deal with all aspects of CCHFV have been a beacon for other disease endemic countries and also to countries that are at risk of being endemic in the future.
