Abstract

Traffic accidents result in deaths, injuries and property damages. Turkey placed

in one of the first rows of the accident list among the world countries. It is not

possible to explain this fact by lack of education, inadequacy of roads or

carelessness: plans should be made properly. Passage of transit roads from urban

areas, or roads’ becoming an in-city road in time, enlarge the dimensions of the

problem.

The Black Sea Coastal Highway (BSCH) has gained great importance from

economical, political, geopolitical and strategic aspects in recent years. It has

become an international road with the opening of Sarp border gate. On the other

hand, it seems like an urban road and exposed to dense pedestrian traffic, due to

existence of many settlements along it. Because the average speed in this transit

road is high, the number of accidents is also high.

In this study, drawbacks of passage of transit roads from urban areas were

investigated, and current situation of the BSCH was given as an example.
