Abstract
Using rectangular elements, a consistent finite-element Vlasov model is developed to analyze plates resting on a layered soil medium. The soil properties can vary linearly in the vertical direction. The disadvantages of use of the classical Winkler model-those yielding nonconservative values of bending moment and shear forces-are brought out in the paper.
