As well known, the granite includes various hard and brittle minerals with different behaviors. Therefore, the resistance of the granite to any mechanical breakdown depends on the several factors including microhardness of each mineral. The present paper aims at presenting the preliminary results of an experimental study investigating the influence of the microhardness of the rock, one of the lesser known variables involved in the cutting process, on the cutting performance of abrasive waterjet (AWJ). In this respect, pre-dimensioned granite samples having different properties were cut by an AWJ for various process (control) parameters. As a result of the study, a consistent relationship between the cut depth, cutting wear zone, kerf angle and the microhardness was found.
